StudyAbroad.com Sending Student to London to Celebrate International Education Week

17 Year Old Writes Winning Essay on the Importance of International Education.

CHESTER, PA, November 13, 2001 -

Rachel Moran, a 17-year-old high school student from Rochester, NY, will be spending the summer of 2002 in London, England as the grand prizewinner in the InternationalEducationWeek.com essay contest. The contest was held to promote the launch of InternationalEducationWeek.com, (http://www.internationaleducationweek.com), a site designed by Studyabroad.com, an online service of Educational Directories Unlimited in Chester, Pennsylvania, and required high school and college students to write an essay to one of three essay questions about international study and multiculturalism. StudyAbroad.com is the #1 Web site for information about studying abroad, and InternationalEducationWeek.com is a leading resource for news and information about International Education Week and multicultural events scheduled this week and throughout the year.

"With the right education-not training, but a true education with a discussion-based, thought-provoking, analysis centered curriculum-students will encounter far off lands from inside their schools. Yet there is still that green hope, that breathless fantasy, that devotion not to the knowledge itself, but to the process of learning it. That is an international education, an education without boundaries," Moran writes in her winning essay, "Sending Postcards Without Stamps."

International Education Week is a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State in order to promote and celebrate multiculturalism and international education. The Week was first established by the Clinton Administration in the year 2000. Throughout International Education Week-November 12-16, 2001- campuses, embassies, and communities are encouraged to hold activities celebrating international education and diversity.

Moran’s grand prize includes three weeks of study at Richmond-The American International University in London, including housing, meals, tuition and airfare. The prize was provided courtesy of the American Institute of Foreign Study (AIFS) (http://www.aifsabroad.com), which organizes cultural exchange programs throughout the world for more than 50,000 students each year.

Moran, a student at Rochester's Pittsford Sutherland High School, wrote an essay that stood out in a contest that attracted entries from high school and college students around the country. Winning second place honors in the contest was Rachel Wellhausen, a student at the University of Arizona, who received a globe reference set, which included an elegant globe displayed atop a cherry-stained shelf containing reference books. The third place winner was Jaron Gilinsky of the University of Florida, who received a gift certificate to Amazon.com. All winning essays can be viewed online at InternationalEducationWeek.com and Studyabroad.com.

"Many students dream of studying abroad and learning about different countries, customs and cultures," says Mark Shay, CEO of Educational Directories Unlimited. "Rachel Moran's winning essay beautifully conveyed the longing that many young people feel to explore the world, and captured the essence of what makes an international education experience so rewarding and memorable."

InternationalEducationWeek.com is co-sponsored by StudyAbroad.com, AIFS, the Institute of International Education (IIE) and NAFSA. The site provides a comprehensive resource for students and University officials for International Education Week.
