Studyabroad.com Becomes A Sponsor Of The "Let's Get Real!" Academic Competition
Chester, PA, July 5, 2000 -
Studyabroad.com (http://www.studyabroad.com), the leading online source for international education information, has become the fifth corporate sponsor and the first ever dot-com sponsor of the "Let's get Real!" high school academic competition.
Let's Get Real is a state-wide competition and an opportunity for students to gain experience working on real business problems. Corporate co-sponsors supply real problems for which teams submit solutions in business format. Studyabroad.com's involvement includes the presentation of two problems into the business-oriented competition-one in marketing, the other in product development.
Each team chooses one problem from a list. Problems might include areas such as environmental issues, manufacturing, distribution, software creation, human resources, health and safety, facilities design, public relations, or any other areas deemed important to the corporations involved. They then analyze the problem, create a report and submit it to the company.
The contest begins in the fall with student entries due by January. Winners of the preliminary stages present their solutions to the company at the company site.
Let's Get Real is an opportunity for students to apply their problem-solving skills to authentic business situations and for business to become directly involved with young people. Last year's program was composed of 234 participants, 59 teams and 20 schools. The winning team composed of seventh graders submitted information that led to a savings of approximately $20,000 per year for the sponsoring corporation. This year, the Let's Get Real program is expanding to Ohio and hoping to double in size.
"Participation in Let's Get Real offers us the opportunity to connect our products to high school students, a target audience for our site," said Mark Shay, co-founder of Studyabroad.com. "It allows us to mobilize teams of motivated, business-minded students to help develop new ways to reach the student market and foster strong relationships with the school communities."
Dr. Dan Holt, founder of the Let's Get Real competition noted that "having a well respected, educationally oriented dot-com company join us is exciting and opens new avenues for our competition." The other sponsors of Let's Get Real are Hershey Foods Corporation, Pennsylvania Power and Light (PPL Corp), Commonwealth Telephone Enterprises - Epix Division and Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Corporation (Hershey Park).
